“Team not performing up to expectations? High staff turnover? Problem attracting talent?”
Do the above sound familiar? All the pay and rewards don’t seem to be working?
Well, there is something we can do about it, improving that one part of our organisation that separates us from our competition. Something that has seen the likes of organisations such as ZAPPOS, GOOGLE and VALVe achieve record performance, and attraction and retention of employees that have catapulted them in to stardom. Looking closer to home and away from tech world, local heroes PKT Logistics boasts employee retention rates that are nearly unheard of not just in the unsexy world of logistics but dare i say it, in Malaysia.
What do all these amazingly successful organisations share? The right culture. A culture focused on the single most important thing in any organisation, The PEOPLE.
Have you ever considered a career in the tiling industry? What? Tiles?
I hear a resounding NO, and like most other graduates and younger generation hitting the employment market, the construction business (unless your dad handed the business to you!) including the tiling industry is not even on your ‘to consider’ list of choice employment. In fact, you probably never even thought there was such an industry… until you renovate your house that is, even then you’d probably leave it to the contractors.
The 24th of August 2016 will be forever etched in my memory and 2016 being one of the most epic of birthdays ever. Thanks to the amazing PulsElites, The MYFM Breakfast Show and DJ JEFF, it is also immortalised in cyber space forever. The team worked with The MYFM Breakfast Crew for a month to create a MYFM first of its kind production that scared the hell out of me and in the end left me moved and touched.
In the world where information flows so quickly and access to anything is a mere click away, non proprietary goods and services very quickly and easily fall into the ‘commodity zone’. So if everything you offer is being offered or can be offered by someone else, what makes you different? What makes your stand out from the competition? What is truly unique to you?
In our quest to build a unique values driven organisation, Pulse Asia is continuously working to ensure we get our fundamentals right. These fundamentals or the foundation of our legacy will be the cultivation and disciplined practice of our values, defining and maintaining the Pulse Asia culture, and the continued implementation and fine-tuning of our strategies to propel us towards our vision.
As PulsElites we focus on continuous self improvement, hence we continuously seek inspiration and are always looking out for opportunities to learn. I’ve been following a fellow Bond Alumnus who has been making waves for years in the legal and property industry here in Malaysia. As we were blessed with the opportunity to reset what we were doing, i got in touch with this “Maverick Lawyer” and requested for one of his famous private tours of his award winning “CAstle”.
An interior design award winning law firm… what?
Thats Right! Chur Associates is a legal firm that has won an interior design award!
While reflecting on how we’re doing things differently today, i decided to pen down some of the key learnings. When the brand we help built collapses, thats when your eyes open and you can see things clearly, when you realise and reflect on the strategies, the steps taken, the actions, the things you said, the things people were saying. You start to recall and note down how the people in the organisation behaved and you notice a pattern. These are the results of the unspoken rules and values that govern the organisation, its culture. Like having an epiphany you are suddenly aware of what you did wrong, as a leader in the company, what you failed to act upon.
The captain always goes down with the ship, and if i am the captain of this ship it is my job to ensure the ship stays its course and never goes down because by golly i don’t want to drown (again!). Continue reading “A Look In The Mirror”
PKT Logistics is operating in an industry where you would almost certainly never hear the words ‘people centric’ and ‘fun corporate culture’ be frequently mentioned let alone ingrained into every aspect of its business. PKT even prides itself as being Facebook compulsory! Definitely unheard of even in many industries.
Well with only a 2% employee turnover rate and 50% returning staff, PKT logistics is putting Malaysia on the world map for logistics thanks to it’s commitment to being world class in all aspects of its business. So when an opportunity arrived to spend half a day with the man behind this revolutionary transformation was offered by my friend from Medicos Disposables , i jumped on the opportunity without hesitation. An intimate session with the amazing Dato Michael Tio or better known as DMT was truly an amazing experience and an inspiring afternoon to be remembered.

“We don’t compete. We’ve created our culture and we’re continuously evolving. In the end it’s up to the jobseeker to decide which organization suits his/her desires values and goals.”
Had a quick chat with recruitment and corporate culture guru Derek Toh recently where i shared my views on Gen Y work life balance and how we recruit PulsElites. Read about it here and check out his blog to follow this former Robert Walters associate director’s thoughts on recruitment, corporate culture and Gen Y.
