A week ago we signed a 2-year contract and underwent training with a multi national pharmaceutical company as their appointed event management agency in Malaysia. Today we are expanding on a topic within a previous post. In that post we spoke about clear concise open communication between business partners, in fact it should be a practice in all aspects of our lives between everyone we meet.

While having and maintaining clear concise open communication between partners keeps assumptions away, ensures everyone is on the same page and minimises misunderstandings, the possibilities of conflict or misalignment can and will still occur.
It can occur for many reasons; by default no two humans are alike, our needs and wants although can be similar can never be exactly the same, everyone is also developing and growing at different levels in life, the circles we roll in are different, our upbringing is different, there are so many factors that affect our judgement, wants, needs and decisions in life. These factors drive our business and career decisions, they drive our performance at work, they determine our commitment to projects and more. The difference between two people is what gives rise to conflicts.

So what can you do to minimise conflicts and keep everyone in-sync?

In a previous post we spoke about the top 3 pieces of advice, today we are diving a little deeper and going to look at item number one, VISION.

Vision is determining where you’re going, your north star. A shining beacon that keeps you on course no matter the weather. It could be your dream translated into a statement, or literally how the organisation looks like in 20-years or maybe how it looks like at the end of your life, it could also be what you want the company to remembered for or known for. It answers questions like what legacy do you want to leave behind? What is the purpose of this organisation? If your only goal is to make money, go get a job, work hard and climb the corporate ladder. 95% of businesses fail in the first five years. Truth is, even if you do make it past the 5 year mark… your personal take home income may never be as high as what you’d be earning as an employee.

They say life is not about the destination but the journey. And its a long journey, so who you travel with makes all the difference.

If you’ve decided on where you’re heading (the vision) and you’ve got on board a ship (the company), you can’t steer a massive ship all by yourself so working and piloting the ship to your destination requires a crew. A crew that has to be made up of sailors, navigators, engineers, deck hands and a host of other shipmates who are required to perform a plethora of functions to keep the ship afloat (financially sound!) and on the right course.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

To get to your next port of call smoothly, you are gonna need to have the right people on board, people who are equipped with the required skills to perform the job functions, want to go to the same destination as you and most importantly have the right attitude and personality. The latter because when you’re in the middle of the atlantic, a mutiny could cause irreversible damage that would send you off-course or worse yet, sink the ship. Before business

An inspiring friend asked me this question after hearing of the wins and lessons i faced throughout my journey as an entrepreneur; What are the 3 most important pieces of advice would you give to someone who wanted to start a business. I’ve been asked this question in different forms a few times and the ensuing conversation was a truly meaningful one which hit close to the heart both for my new friend and i.

Start

Thats the key word to anything in life.

For years people have told me that i’ve always had an opinion on things, voicing my thoughts where they weren’t needed or speaking my mind when it was not necessary. I had an opinion on each one of those people too…

Then the high wave i was riding finally crashed and like a surfer hitting the corals, it hit me in the face. Happiness was a result of being mindful, being consciously in control of your thoughts. Like the great Gandhi said, If your thoughts become your words, and your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny then that path i was on was definitely not the destiny i had in mind. I made and continuously make an effort to consciously control my thoughts through active gratitude practice, meditation and what has been most effective for me; positive reframing. Having pulled through (still not over) a tough period of my life, i’ve been able to confront my fears, address issues i once kept mum about, seek help when needed, and refocus my life and business.

A leopard can’t change its spots. I still have opinions albeit this time round they are no longer opinions but just me being transparent in sharing what i’ve gone through in life and business.

So here’s the start of me sharing my experiences and knowledge about the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur, life teachings, wins & lessons in business, importance of culture & the team, and most importantly staying happy. Methods and practices shared here in this blog are not the best nor are they roadmaps for success, merely me sharing my experience, what worked and what didn’t in hopes of helping others find their own ways.
